Medical malpractice: A wrong or untimely diagnosis can be deadly

Professional medical treatment is a process that thousands of Maine patients experience on a daily basis. Arguably the most important and crucial part of this process is a correct and timely diagnosis. In order to provide the appropriate and correct treatment, the patient must first be correctly diagnosed. Any delay or discrepancy in these initial stages can snowball into big problems for the patient down the road. Medical malpractice like this can prevent the patient from making a full recovery.

A lawsuit was filed in another state by a woman who claims that an inadequate and delayed diagnosis left her with permanent injuries. According to the lawsuit, the woman sought treatment for a lesion on her right breast. Allegedly, the woman's doctor failed to properly perform a biopsy on the area of concern and also failed to correctly interpret and follow up on an ultrasound test.

The woman claims that the alleged delay in treatment forced her to undergo a procedure to remove her breast. She also claims that she now suffers permanent disfigurement, a reduced life expectancy and mental anguish. The plaintiff accuses the defendant of negligence by deviating from the accepted standard of care. She seeks punitive and compensatory damages as well as all just relief.

A delayed or incorrect diagnosis can be deadly, especially for patients that suffer from diseases such as cancer. If medical malpractice has resulted in permanent damages or the death of a loved one, families in Maine can take legal action. A successful lawsuit can provide families with much-needed compensation as well as a sense of justice.
