Alleged medical negligence leads to hepatitis C infection

Patients in Maine have access to some of the best medical care available in the country. Doctors, nurses and other health care professionals must undergo extensive academic and on-the-job training in order to legally care for and treat patients. Not surprisingly, a common trait among these health care professionals is an acute attention to detail, as every procedure must be performed in a thorough and careful manner. However, when details or safety measures are neglected, patients can suffer permanent injuries and even death. Medical negligence is a very real problem across the country.

A woman in another state filed a lawsuit against a hospital after she allegedly contracted hepatitis C while receiving medical treatment in an emergency room. The woman says she sought treatment due to shortness of breath, chest pains and possible pneumonia. According to the lawsuit, the woman received a letter in the mail four years later indicating that she could have been exposed to hepatitis C.

The woman alleges that, while receiving care at the hospital, a nurse used a contaminated needle to administer her medication. Allegedly, this nurse had been accused of stealing drugs and infecting patients. The plaintiff seeks to hold the hospital responsible and asserts that the hospital failed to protect her and did not investigate the nurse's behavior or fire her in a timely manner.

Tragically, thousands of patients are injured or killed every year across the country due to human error during medical procedures. Those in Maine who have suffered injuries or the loss of a loved one due to medical negligence can take legal action. A successful lawsuit could result in much-needed compensation as well as a sense of justice.
